WERKSTATT KÜNSTLERISCHE LITHOGRAPHIE, or the Artistic Lithography Workshop was founded in Berlin in 1987. In the nearly four decades of its existence, it has earned respect as a printmaking workplace, even beyond the borders of Germany. More than 200 artists from around the world have worked in the workshop, which cultivates the classic printing techniques of stone lithography, etching and woodcut. Much like CCP, they offer studio space for artists, the expert advice of printers, instructional courses, editioning services, and a gallery space.

Spring Showing

My small 5” woodblock, Ocean Cliff will be at the Small Works Show from March 29- April 23 at Mamaroneck Artist Guild.

I hope the new owner of Casco Bay enjoys this beautiful piece as much as I enjoyed making it! Pothos is still available only at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking collection in Norwalk, CT.

Ocean Series

This is a very proud series for me because I re-did this idea over and over and over until I finally got it right.

To prove it, I have a pile of scrap wood with the same designs carved into them and a pile of artist proofs in my abandoned work file.

This series was inspired by one of my favorite beach spots, Camp Hero State Park in Montauk, New York. Waves are fierce. They crash into the elevated shoreline and erode the earth away. Crashing waves expose roots, rocks, and stone over time. I love to sit there observing, thinking about the geological evolution of the island.

These several works were created in a two step reductive process. Inking multiple colors with the brayer was inspired Hokusai. Who better when creating woodblock reduction prints of the ocean?! The first layer uses a blended brayer technique under the final deep blue layer.

Lyndhurst Mansion

My first time exhibiting at Lyndhurst’s outdoor art festival.

This show took me several months to prepare for. From ordering / assembling new framing, tent equipment, signage, marketing materials, packaging, furniture, and lots of many little details- I can say it was totally worth it. Yes, I sold lots of my work- but even more, I had many awesome conversations about my work and the art of printmaking. Especially woodblock reduction printmaking. Some never heard of the art form and it was so gratifying to teach someone how special woodblock printmaking is. Then, there were other great convos with those who had lots of knowledge from wood properties like woodgrain, to celebrity printmakers they knew, and the finer details of printmaking like presses, paper, and gauges. I am so happy to of met all the people I chatted with and the fellow artists I spent those four long days with. I thank everyone who came out to the show and a huge massive thank you to those art lovers out there that support my work.

Experiments in Etching @TRPS

Took a weekend intensive with Rachel Gross at Two Rivers Printmaking Center in White River Junction, Vermont.

Learned a ton, made lots, and experimented with my copper plates until they were obliterated.

The two Lilac etchings below are from the same copper plate. One in black and the other is a la poupee.

Etchings have a beautiful finish to them. They’re like fancy sketches.

I had a very scratched up copper plate for this Peonies etching, so I spend a lot of time buffing out scratches on the flowers using 100grit sandpaper, steel wool, and a burnisher.

Comparing with the previous etching, this a la poupee version of Peonies shows the work of all that buffing.

a final experiment on the Peonies plate using aquatint with spray paint and a variety grounds including a homemade one that gave me hell.

Happy to have my work showing on the west coast again at Las Lagunas.
